    Hi All,

I am looking for information on my Great Grandparents John Kerr and Martha Young. They were married in St. Mary's Church, Glenravel in 1891. John's parents were Robert Kerr and Margaret McAvoy, I think they came from the Ballycastle/Armoy area originally. I am interested in wider family members in the Glenravel area. My Great Grandparents emigrated to Scotland in 1892 and settled there, spending their remaining days in the town of Slamannan, Stirlingshire. Some older family members say there were relations in the Cargan area and one in particular was also called John Kerr. I believe he was a School Teacher in the local school at the turn of the last century and was married to Mary Carey. I would be grateful if anyone can help me with any further information.

    Kind Regards

    Hugh

This looks to be John Kerr, the teacher. He was born in Donegal:

John married Mary Carey on 27.10.1896 at Glenravel RC. He was a bachelor and lived in Dungonnell. His father was Dennis Kerr, farmer. Mary was from Carrycowan and her father Charles was also a farmer.

Mary appears to have died in 1902.

    Family 1911:

    Probate abstract:

Kerr John of Cargan Glenravel P.O. county Antrim retired school teacher died 22 December 1941 Probate Belfast 28 April to Thomas Denis Kerr bank clerk and Mary Helena Kerr school teacher. Effects £238 18s. 3d.

John Kerr & Martha Young’s marriage shows John was 20 and a bachelor. He was miner and lived at Parkmore Row. His father Robert was a shepherd.

John appears to have been born on 28.11.1868 at Tureagh near Armoy.

John Kerr of Cargan(the school teacher) had six children, 4 boys and two girls - Isabella became a nun, and Mary Helena was a teacher. Another son became a priest. John's wife Mary died 7-May-1910. If I find out anymore information, I will let you know. This information came from my cousin Colm Scullion

Further info on the Kerrs - John Kerr, the schoolmaster from Cargan and his wife Mary Carey. Of the 4 boys, John and Patrick became priests, Thomas was an unmarried bank official, and Charles, aka Carl married and lived around London and had several children, one of his great granddaughters has a tree on ancestry.com. Some descendants of Mary Careys's sister are still in Glenravel.
